AMC-In our group, Adeaumus Maintain Champlain, we made a video depicting the various ways that Champlain College is tring to use sustainability to reserve their energy usage. At the begining of our project we, as a group, viewed many different videos to see which topics were most important to each of us, to use for primry topics for our video project.
As our production of the video rolled on, we found that we were coming up with more and more dialogue dipicting our power tools. We ended up needing to cut some out just because of our time slot. :)
A we posted on our group blog, here are the various ones that we finalized in our video:
BRAIN: Limbic – images and music
TRENDS/SHIFTS:
Epistemological Shift – (from word to image) --- we took our script and put it into an image, our video
Technological Shift – (from analog to digital) ---we watched our video on our personal computers
Personal Shift – (from mass to personal/participatory) --- posted to our AMSC blog, video posted to UTube
PRINCIPLES:
Reality Construction – What stories are not being told? Champlain still has a ways to go in energy conservation and reduce carbon and waste
Production Techniques – What kinds of production techniques do this media use? It uses such production techniques as camera angles, lighting, editing, sound, symbols.
Value Message – What kinds of value messages do this media promote? Messages portrayed in the video are positive and what kinds of sustainability is happening on the Champlain College campus.
Ownership – Who or what owns this media project. Our team, ASMC, owns this media project.
Individual Meaning – What differing meanings might other individuals or groups find. Other individuals or groups might find that Champlain is not doing enough or not soon enough to become more sustainable, a green campus.
Emotional Transfer – What emotions does this media tap. What might we consider if we think more deeply about this media? The emotions that this media taps is humor, positive aspect in regards to becoming a “green” campus, and educational information.
Pacing – What do you observe about this media upon reflection (after showing media multiple times, slowing media down, or stopping media regularly for discussion)? Our team observed the errors made in our video, but we still think it was well produced with what we had to work with as well as the amount of time we had to produce the video. When first shooting our video and then watching it, we could see our mistakes, and we knew what we needed to do in order to correct them. We wanted our video to meet the “three “S” …Short, Simple, Sophisticated.
PERSUASIVE TECHNIQUES:
Plain Folks – college students making and being in our video
Big Lie – Champlain does not have motion sensor lights installed in the cafeteria yet
Big Lie – Jazzman’s doesn’t have the greatest tasting coffee around
Bandwagon – everyone is doing it, no longer using a tray
Symbols – Tray, Jazzman Mug, Little Debbie Cakes buried under all the food on the tray
Rhetorical Question – Can you imagine the amount of water that is being conserved?
Hyperbole – Jazzman’s serves the greatest tasting coffee around campus
Either/Or - …you are either a coffee mug user or a tree abuser
Humor – hungry as a bear coming out of hibernation, loading up on Little Debbie cakes, coffee mug user to tree abuser, Animal House Clip
Warm Fuzzies – the little Debbie Cakes and the smell of freshly brewed coffee
Nostalgia – James and Denise remember when the cafeteria used trays daily
Testimonial – Christina Erickson, the Sustainability Coordinator, for Champlain College
Timing – Denise and Erica have a look of disgust on their faces when James comes to the table using a tray, which is packed with food.
FINAL THOUGHTS-
The final video came out amazing, John did a great job on all of the editing. We had a few group miscommunications. Our last meeting I called James to let him know I would not be able to attend, and he said he would repeat the message to our team mates, which never happened, as I found out he himself did not go to the meeting. The video is also a lot longer than any of us intended it to be, but I think it was because of how we produced it, as a skit. However, we maintained as a group and had our main goals and image captured in our video. Our voice of reasons never changed either, and even though some of us had many different ideas, we worked them out together and never put anyone down. We all had a lot of fun in the makings of this, and I think that was what made it all the more interesting. With James' humor and Johns direction of detail, my shooting techniques, and Denise's capibility of putting words together, it was an awesome learning experience.
(Note to Dr. Rob- I know I am one media meditation short. This is okay with me, and I realize it may account for a lot of my grade, but I wanted to thank you so much for working with me through this semester, a lot of untimely things happened, and I am so very greatful for all of your understanding. I have learned so much this semester, and in the business field, Twittering will deffinately be useful as well as blogging, even though I wasnt so keen to the idea in the begining. Hehe. Good luck with the news paper, the Yak Farm, and the rest of your teaching career, your a very memorable person and bring great strength to the Champlain Community- signing off now. Thanks Again, Jessie)

FINAL EXAMINATION- APRIL 2010
MILITAINMENT INC. VIDEO- FINAL EXAMINATION
THESIS:
-How war ha taken a place in our culture, as an entertainment reach.
FACTS:
1. Jessica Lynch was captured and held hostage, making problems & major publicity throughout the United States.
2. SHOCK & AWE: -Destroy Iraqi power, Music=persuasion, U.S.sells weapons advertisement & to other countries ($$$), Mesmorizing television event= ratings & advertisements
3. George Bush made appearance on USS Abraham Lincoln, where soon after the toy industry made him his own figurine, and followed with more toys, such as the personalized army men (of actual war heros). The toy industry made 5X more than they did just as the war was begining.
4. The NAVY and Gamecube made a universal commercial advertisement together to influence the issue that every "normal" guy who plays whatever game, can come together in a time of war.
5. 40-60% of action figures come from teenagers and the older adult male consumers, and these action figures of troops in the Middle East came straight from the news/television. Army began to produce their own action figures in 2006, so that they would also take a piece of the toy industries big boom.
TRIBUNE BRAIN:
-LIMBIC: The begining of this film produced upbeat and exciting music, bringing you into the interesting and capturing photographs of the war.
-LIMBIC: Country music of the war produced, is shown as patriotic and symbolizes the good of the war. As it is played in part of the video, there is a calming and sadness to words and beats heard, making it seem like we all have to take a toll by the people we know in the Middle East, whome are fighting for this country.
-NEOCORTEX: Every photo that is showed triggers our brain to the lyrics of the music, and the narrator. Every picture being more powerful than the next, we see the ruins and tolls that this war has caused, catching our immediate attention to the film.
PRINCIPLES:
1. PRODUCTION TECHNIQUES: The shock & awe of capturing multiple images in different camera angles, and lighting.
2. VALUE MESSAGE: We are all facing the war in all of our entertainment industries (toys, news, advertisements, ect. ) We need to actually relize what we are dealing with than what is being portrayed to us as a society.
3. EMOTIONAL TRANSFER: We feel as though we, as the citizens of the U.S., are being taken advantage of so that a few industries can make another dollar. Where are the real issues that need to be discussed? Where are the actual facts that we need to know? And why is the war being publicized as a good thing, when it only causes harm and distruction?
TRENDS:
-TECHNOLOGICAL SHIFT: No longer just getting strieght facts, but seeing more Television programs, movies, ads, ect. trying to produce "war worthy" stuff to get their own piece of the pie. ($)
-AESTHETIC SHIFT: We are no longer just hearing about the war but now we can see and pay with action figures first hand, based on war photographs. There are even actual set ups of the damages done in Iraq & Afghanistan.
-EPISTEMELOGICAL SHIFT: Image of how the war is in Iraq is very much tainted by all the media. (The media is making it into what they want, one sided)
T.O.P.S:
-RHETORICAL QUESTION: Navy Commercial- "When was the last time you did something...?"
-IMAGE/SYMBOL: American Flag is shown throughout this production-OUR COUNTRY
-BIG LIE: We are seen as the good - Bombs= excitement & goodness.
-EITHER/OR: "For us, or against us"
-IMAGE/SYMBOL: War made into action figures/political people. As George Bush was made into an action figure after doing his speech on the USS Abraham Lincoln.
-DENIAL: Avoidance of actual facts towars wa in general, and very misleading.
-RACE CARD: Toy companies are portraying Arabs ina bad light, with their action figures, as are video game producers.

MID-TERM (spring-2010)
After studying media for eight weeks in this class, what have you learned? Please be specific.
I have learned many things in this class. How to use an RSS reader, how to use twitter, how to define each of our power tool sets, and much more. I have such a fun time in this class, I don't even know where the time has gone, and how I was able to get this much information in such a short period of time. I have to hand it to you Dr. W, I havent learned this much in any of my other classes, and if I ever have, it deffinately wasn't this much fun!
What is the most important thing you have learned about yourself as a ..... in this class so far?
Critical Reader: I know that even if there isn't something I am going to enjoy reading about, that there always seems to be some underlying fun facts that I find when I have accomplished the reading task. After I have finished I feel smarter, and I know that there was useful information that I will know for later on, if needed.
Writer: As a writer, I have learned how to be more outspoken, with the blogging. I am very critical of my own work, but I have learned to be more free, and actually care more about what I am writing about.
Critical thinker: I need to work on becoming a better critical thinker. Media has been a very big part of my life, and I think that I am now realizing how much of a toll it has taken on me. Whether it was wanting to look like a face on a magazine, or have the latest new trends, I think that I will be more rational now when I think about myself compared to those who are featured in magazines.
What's one thing YOU would do differently this first half of the semester if you were to take this class again?
I think I would have studied more with the power tool sets. Not that I didn't study.. just study more with them. Even if I just took the time outside of my own blog and used them on a television commercial/show or even a movie, I would have a better understanding of each of them. I think that I also could have picked out ones that I wasn't so familiar with and tried to sit down and find advertisements, or shows that featured them. Over-all I think I am doing alright with the power tool sets, and that I am being a little too critical :P.
What's one thing you would like ME to do differently this first half of the semester if you were to take this class again?
I think that it would be useful to use the powertools more in the begining of this class. That way we would be more used to them, and have a better feel for the use. The excersices that we did do in class were great, but I still felt a little lost and nervous about memorizing them all in such a short period.
Please comment on the usefulness of the course blog, your personal blog, our films, and our book as learning tools.
The Course Blog: I like the way that as a class, we get to spend time viewing eachothers thoughts and work, as well as getting our own out there for everyone else to see. It is a useful way for us to be able to interact with the age of convergence.
My Personal Blog: I found it very useful to be able to set up our own blogging space. This I feel is going to be useful to students, as well as myself, for when we do get placed in jobs where we are able to say "Yes! I know how to do this!", and possibbly make a difference when being selected for that job. :)
The Films: I loved the films that we viewed during our classes. These films were chosen well because of the relativeness to not only what's going on now, but for all of the ideas and topics we cover through our textbook, and class discussions.
The Book: I have been in so many classes where the textbook is so outdated, that it still has Bill Clinton as our president. I love the fact that this textbook that was chosen for our class is relevant as well to our time. Thank you for that!

Media Meditation #2- NBA ALL-STARS
As predicted, the NBA All-Stars game was great. With such well known players, such as Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, Rajon Rondo, and Lebron James, the East won by 2 points. This was a respectable game to watch, as many did. As it ended at 141-139, there was a lot of hype towards the ending, making it a truely exciting game.
I find that this would be a tough thing to do for a lot of these players, as they play against one another in many games throughout the year. From the Celtic's team (my absolute favorite), came three players; Rondo, Garnett, and Pierce. They played together for the East. So, it was not an uncomfortable game for everyone.
This was the advertisementfor the introduction of the NBA All-Star game. In this commercial we see a lot of the Power Tool Techniques, from our Mass Media class.
LIMBIC BRAIN- We use our Limbic brain while taking in the music of the commercial ad. The music in the background is used to enhance the players, and pump up the crowd (aimed at you).
NEOCORTEX- As the Limbic brain takes in the sounds, you use your neocortex to figure out what NBA stars are being broadcasted on the ad itself. It also brings fans back to each game the shot that is being exposed is taken from.
STRENGTH- This ad also uses strength by persuading the appeals of strong leadership from these All-Star players. This is important because all of these players are well looked up to as heros by many around the world.
BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE- Beautiful people is used in the sense that these are all well payed top NBA players. Anyone would want to have their talent and life, and this commercial brings that out.
REPETITION-There are repeated shots taken (slam dunks), by each of the players emphasized on this advertisement. Even though they are all different people/players, they are all there to do the same thing. Win.
SYMBOLS- The NBA is a large group of players, stock holders, and affiliates of all kinds, the logo for the NBA is shows throughout this whole commercial, as well as the TNT logo, where the show is being aired.
*GO CELTICS!!!

Media Meditation #1- VIDEO GAME OR MOVIE?
An advertisement came on television the other day, as I sat and thought to myself .. just another movie coming out.
I found out however, that it was not a movie at all, but a video game. Amazing technology now, makes it seem like you are actually watching a movie with real people involved, than actually playing a game. The involvment that these games cover is phenominal, but how long can the gaming world keep up with today's trends?
As shown in this advertisement, through EA Games, Mass Effect 2 is an ultimate gamer's interactive experience. With all of the technology that we are exposed to now, and all of the newer generations taking part of it, how much further is the gaming world going to be able to go?
In this particular advertisement they use special effects and scenarios that we usually experience through movies.
WHAT MASS EFFECT 2 OFFERS THEIR VIEWERS-
AESTHETIC SHIFT- When dealing with convergence in our world today, Mass Effect has taken this to the ultimate point. This new age technology of making it seem like the one playing the game is actually in this particular "world", highlights games like these and seperates them from the rest.
PRODUCTION TECHNIQUES: as shown, the lighting and angles of the footage for Mass Effect 2, make all of the difference in relating to their gamers. The most important part however to capture their prospected buyers, are the sound effects. This game is made up of shootings, destruction, and aliens. Without the sound effects, this wouldn't be such an exclusive game, making it a huge trigger to its' audience.
NOSTALGIA: Mass Effect 2 uses the appeal of being mythical or scientific fiction, differing it from other games, such as NBA Live or MLB. With their skyscrapers, aliens, weapons, and graphics, this game alters the perception of those playing it.
TIMING: Mass Effect persuades through the game's story elements and production techniques, which enhances the media's meanings. The meanings being that they want to appeal to all "gamers" worldwide.
STRENGTH: This video game gives the strength of persuading by the appeals to be strong, aggressive, and very much "in-charge". The whole point in this video game is to be the player that holds the power, and that he/she is going to save the world by killing off these "alien villians".
Our question to these types of media is whether or not they are going to continue the drastic route of making the game more REAL. With this age in technology is EA Games and other competitors going to even survive?
As the internet is becoming more and more popular for even television shows, or movies. Are we soon going to see it play into these games where the PS3, XBOX, Wii, and other systems, will become extinct?
Already in the last 2 yeas, EA's stock share prices have lowered about 40$ per share, and are selling at a minimum of 15$ today. How are companies such as these going to hold out and be able to stick through the years of convergence to come? Time will tell eventually, but it is a question that not only these companies need to worry about, but also the users of these gaming systems.

OBAMA- "Despite hardships, we don't quit"
Obama showed, in his State of the Union Address, that he can handle the entire Republican caucus.
It is a pretty tough job. We are all pretty sure of our own positions, and I can not help but admire someone that can articulate his position as well as mine. I have not agreed with a lot of Obama's methods for accomplishing his goals, but I have been encouraged by his actions lately. The need for 60 votes in the Senate makes most things nearly impossible for anything meaningful to get done.
He is intellectually engaged, and his performance today demonstrated his ability to articulate his position while surrounded by hostile partisans. He showed guts, and class.
He has fullfilled the most significant promise he made as far as I am concerned. He has attempted to lead and tackle difficult issues. I will make my evaluation of his success at the end of his tenure as President, but not before. Obama has not only tried, but has become the leader of America in one of our most difficult time of hardships. I don't believe that anyone could do much better and get things done as quickly as everyone seems they should. It takes time and an outstanding amount of work to get through every problem that America has right now.
Obama not only addressed the major underlying issues that we have going on, but addressed others, as Haiti's. Some believe that Haiti was addressed by America even more quickly than we did in the crisis in Louisiana. However, for a country who has nothing who else is going to pick up the slack and come forth? Obama is not only trying his best to help America but has problems such as Haiti to consider as well. I believe that it's a nobel thing.
Further more, Obama has connected with us, THE PEOPLE more than I can say the last few presidents have. He has a voice of reason and trust, and connected with me as I watched his speach. Most of the time I have not been engaged with our politics because I too believe that this world would be a much better place if we could find unity within everyone. Democrats and Republicans aside we have many problems here and to fix them it is not only President Obama that needs to take action, it is all of us.
As the news of Haiti has touched all of us in some way or another, we need to come together because what if this happened to us? We would be in an even more difficult situation than we are right now. To get through the tough times, we have to unite. Obama realizes that we are looking for a change, but he alone can only do so much to help us.
"We all share stubborn resilance in the face of adversity." -Obama
In President Obama's speech he used many of our power tools when expressing his 2010 State of the Union Address.
The persuasive technigues and analytical tools in which he applied included;
TESTIMONIAL- Obama used this technique when he expressed the support he's recieved since his election. This included; the nation as a whole, all who've elected and supported him, the Democratic society (as well as the Republicans), and he also derives from helping out the less fortunate people of America.
Plain Folks: Obama describes himself as one of us. This meaning that he knows the hardships because they are not only effecting us individually, but himself as well. He relates himself to us as a common man/individual.
Repitition: As his speech goes on, Obama expresses the same concern and messages over and over again. He is the one who is "going to make a change", he converses about our medical/healthcare needs, our economic stand point, ect. These are problems that we are all very familiar with now as they have been mentioned so many times.
Simple Solutions: Obama offers simpiler examples of how we can all work through these hard times together. Just by coming together, Democratics and Republicans together, working on these difficult problems.
Diversion: At some points in this speech, Obama does drive around our bigger problems. This makes him look like better, and because he knows we already are aware of the issues in America. He uses this technique to better his image as well, making more posative statemens.
The Race Card: As we clearly see, Obama is not our original president. He is a black male, who we see as appearing influential to a bigger variety of individuals. No other president has had this type of connection with African Americans.
There are so many techniques that Obama uses in this State of the Union Address, with countless examples regaurding each one. However, I think that these were the most noticeable and important points. President Obama is a very powerful motivator and by this speech, he was able to reach many of us through the persuasive techniques in which were used.
The persuasive technigues and analytical tools in which he applied included;

There aren't only talented people in this world..
That is my ravishingly lazy cat... His name is Brady. The story behind Brady is; the day that I brought him home, was the same night that Tom Brady was taken out of the game from his torn ACL in 2008.
I wish that my cat was this talented...
My name is Jessie Sansone, I am majoring in Advertisement/Business , & I'm from Essex Junction, Vermont
Over break I saw the film; The Blind Side
One pro to our media culture is the amount of knowledge we can recieve with the endless amount of technology we have now, books, maps and such aren't used like they used to beOne con to our media culture is how everything seems to be like "Big Brother" now, there are privacy issues with everything going on in the interneting world>.
In my spare time I am a single mother, my daughter just turned 2 years old, and I enjoy being able to spend all of my extra time from school with her. So, in the future I hope to continue being an awsome mom, and hope to move somewhere outside of Boston and become a part of the advertising world. Also, in my free time I love to draw and paint!
