Obama showed, in his State of the Union Address, that he can handle the entire Republican caucus.
It is a pretty tough job. We are all pretty sure of our own positions, and I can not help but admire someone that can articulate his position as well as mine. I have not agreed with a lot of Obama's methods for accomplishing his goals, but I have been encouraged by his actions lately. The need for 60 votes in the Senate makes most things nearly impossible for anything meaningful to get done.
He is intellectually engaged, and his performance today demonstrated his ability to articulate his position while surrounded by hostile partisans. He showed guts, and class.
He has fullfilled the most significant promise he made as far as I am concerned. He has attempted to lead and tackle difficult issues. I will make my evaluation of his success at the end of his tenure as President, but not before. Obama has not only tried, but has become the leader of America in one of our most difficult time of hardships. I don't believe that anyone could do much better and get things done as quickly as everyone seems they should. It takes time and an outstanding amount of work to get through every problem that America has right now.
Obama not only addressed the major underlying issues that we have going on, but addressed others, as Haiti's. Some believe that Haiti was addressed by America even more quickly than we did in the crisis in Louisiana. However, for a country who has nothing who else is going to pick up the slack and come forth? Obama is not only trying his best to help America but has problems such as Haiti to consider as well. I believe that it's a nobel thing.
Further more, Obama has connected with us, THE PEOPLE more than I can say the last few presidents have. He has a voice of reason and trust, and connected with me as I watched his speach. Most of the time I have not been engaged with our politics because I too believe that this world would be a much better place if we could find unity within everyone. Democrats and Republicans aside we have many problems here and to fix them it is not only President Obama that needs to take action, it is all of us.
As the news of Haiti has touched all of us in some way or another, we need to come together because what if this happened to us? We would be in an even more difficult situation than we are right now. To get through the tough times, we have to unite. Obama realizes that we are looking for a change, but he alone can only do so much to help us.
"We all share stubborn resilance in the face of adversity." -Obama
In President Obama's speech he used many of our power tools when expressing his 2010 State of the Union Address.
The persuasive technigues and analytical tools in which he applied included;
TESTIMONIAL- Obama used this technique when he expressed the support he's recieved since his election. This included; the nation as a whole, all who've elected and supported him, the Democratic society (as well as the Republicans), and he also derives from helping out the less fortunate people of America.
Plain Folks: Obama describes himself as one of us. This meaning that he knows the hardships because they are not only effecting us individually, but himself as well. He relates himself to us as a common man/individual.
Repitition: As his speech goes on, Obama expresses the same concern and messages over and over again. He is the one who is "going to make a change", he converses about our medical/healthcare needs, our economic stand point, ect. These are problems that we are all very familiar with now as they have been mentioned so many times.
Simple Solutions: Obama offers simpiler examples of how we can all work through these hard times together. Just by coming together, Democratics and Republicans together, working on these difficult problems.
Diversion: At some points in this speech, Obama does drive around our bigger problems. This makes him look like better, and because he knows we already are aware of the issues in America. He uses this technique to better his image as well, making more posative statemens.
The Race Card: As we clearly see, Obama is not our original president. He is a black male, who we see as appearing influential to a bigger variety of individuals. No other president has had this type of connection with African Americans.
There are so many techniques that Obama uses in this State of the Union Address, with countless examples regaurding each one. However, I think that these were the most noticeable and important points. President Obama is a very powerful motivator and by this speech, he was able to reach many of us through the persuasive techniques in which were used.
